i ordered this large one and love it. i was concerned at first about the price, but it was totally worth it. i became frustrated with electrical coffee makers and decided to brew coffee with a french press. it is good looking and makes great coffee.
Highly recommended. You can even see the difference in a side by side comparison. I've been happy with my Braun Coffee Maker with nonbreakable stainless steel carafe for the last several years, but coffee purists told me nothing could compare to the French press method so after careful research I bought this Bodum stainless steel French press. The purists are right: The coffee tastes richer, creamier. My first time I forgot to grind the coffee off the fine setting and I had a few floaters, so make sure your coffee grinder is on a coarse setting.
The thermal carafe keeps the brew hot for more than 30 minutes and it doesn't seem to be harm the flavor by letting the other 2 mugs worth sit in it for that long. When were are at home 4-12oz mugs of coffee is just right. PS - it's so easy to clean after each use. The Columbia 48oz is ideal for making that just right cup of coffee. My wife and I both have 20oz travel mugs and I can make 40oz exactly. One tip: Put hot water in the carafe to preheat it- then spill it out.
If you like your coffee strong, this is definitely for you. It does save you $$ because you won't have to buy paper filters, and I like the adaptability of it being useful for brewing tea as well as coffee. We tried doing it the way the directions guide you, but we found it was strong tasting.we tried diluting the strength on our second go-round, but I guess we will have to keep on making small decreases in the quantity of coffee in order to get it "just right". Well worth the price we felt. We are used to perk coffee in the Farberware coffee pot. We liked this press after having coffee at a friend's house.but, I find it takes much experimenting to adjust the strength of the coffee flavor. The unit itself is sturdy and I won't be able to break it like I did with my old Bodum glass beaker unit.
It also keeps the coffee warm for a long period of time. The presses I could find were small and I found myself making many batches when we had guests. This large french press will make enough coffee to serve 5-6 people with one batch. Although a bit pricey, I would recommend this product. We recently discovered the french press method for making coffee. This method is quick and simple and produces a rich cup of coffee. I also found that this press produces a cleaner coffee with fewer grounds getting past the filter.
